Participation, Agency, and Creation
“Those who are carried to a goal should not think they have reached it.”
— Marie von Ebner Eschenback
It was on a Radio 4 program called Word of Mouth, specifically an episode on Aphorisms. The guest was a man called James Geary who had written a book called “The World in a Phrase”. Towards the end of the episode, he was asked to give an aphorism on various subjects, and this was the aphorism he quoted for the subject of ‘Artificial Intelligence’. In that moment, I was overcome with agreement and it stuck in my mind. As a writer, I feel that if AI should be a tool to assist people, not a replacement — if it is used at all. It’s a phrase that could come across ablest if used in the wrong context. I believe everyone who needs accomodations should be allowed them but also that humans should not lose sight of our instict toward creation and art in a world where consumerism sucks out our souls.
It’s common sense, I think, that you’re going to be happier living your own life than watching other people live theirs digitally.
Will a hard working person be happier than a person who has everything handed to them?
Os art worth more if a person laboured more to make it?
